Suggested mileage allowance
11,000 miles/year
Your driving varies a bit, so your estimate of 10,400 miles is rounded up to the next 1,000.
This is 600 miles above your estimate.
This is a planning estimate. Think about how your driving may change, and check the mileage allowance and excess charges in your lease or finance agreement. It is a starting point, not a recommendation of the best allowance for your contract.
Knowing your real mileage helps you plan fuel costs more accurately and choose the right allowance for lease or finance agreements.

This estimate is based on the driving habits you enter, plus any example figures you have not changed. Actual mileage can differ. Mileage allowances and excess-mileage charges depend on your own agreement.
How your annual mileage is calculated
Each part of your driving is turned into a yearly figure, then added up. The likely range allows for how much your driving varies.
Commute
One-way distance × 2 × days per week × weeks per year. If you work from home some days, two days are taken off, never below one.Family and regular visits
Round-trip distance × visits a year (weekly 52, fortnightly 26, monthly 12, or your own number).Errands and social driving
Miles per week × 52, for each.Occasional trips
For each trip, miles × times a year, then added together.Total, range and allowance
The sum of all five parts. The likely range is the total ± 8% (quite stable), 15% (varies a bit) or 25% (varies a lot). The allowance is a whole thousand: nearest for quite stable, next one up for varies a bit, nearest to the top of the range for varies a lot. It sits between 5,000 and 30,000 miles, and rounding can leave it below your estimate.
Worked example
A 12-mile one-way commute, 5 days a week for 48 weeks. A 60-mile round trip to family every fortnight. 25 local miles and 15 social miles a week. Two 400-mile holidays and two 100-mile airport runs a year. Driving "varies a bit". This is an illustration of the method only, not a UK average or a suggested allowance for any driver.

- 11,000
Commute 12 × 2 × 5 × 48 = 5,760. Family visits 60 × 26 = 1,560. Errands 25 × 52 = 1,300. Social 15 × 52 = 780. Trips 400 × 2 + 100 × 2 = 1,000. Total 10,400. Range 10,400 × 0.85 to × 1.15. Allowance 10,400 rounded up to the next 1,000 = 11,000.
Assumptions and limits
- An empty or invalid field counts as 0 miles.
- The estimate covers all driving you enter, not only miles for one vehicle agreement.
- Rounding in the suggested allowance can land slightly below your estimate when your driving is consistent.
- Above 30,000 miles a year the tool suggests asking about a bespoke or higher-mileage agreement rather than a standard allowance.
- The starting figures are typical examples, not averages for any group of drivers.
- Mileage levels are this calculator's own bands (under 8,000 low, 8,000 to 11,999 average, 12,000 or more high), not a national comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Does my annual mileage affect my car insurance?
Insurers usually ask for an estimate of your annual mileage when you buy or renew cover. Check how your insurer uses it and give an accurate figure.
What happens if I exceed my lease mileage allowance?
Lease and finance agreements normally set a charge for each mile over the allowance. The rate differs by provider, so check your own contract.
Should I include short local trips in my estimate?
Yes. Use the shopping and errands and social driving sections for short local journeys, because they add up over a year.
How can I reduce my annual mileage?
Look at the biggest bar in your breakdown. Combining trips, working from home on some days or choosing closer destinations all reduce the total.
