How the commute cost is calculated
Daily cost
One-way distance × 2 × (4.54609 litres ÷ mpg) × fuel price (p/litre) ÷ 100.Weekly cost
Daily cost × days per week (1 to 7).Annual cost
Weekly cost × 48 working weeks.Monthly cost
Annual cost ÷ 12.
Worked example
A 15-mile commute each way, 5 days a week, in a car that does 40 mpg, with fuel at 143.5p a litre.
- Daily
- £4.89
- Weekly
- £24.46
- Monthly
- £97.85
- Annual Commute Cost
- £1,174.26
30 miles × (4.54609 ÷ 40) = 3.41 litres a day × £1.435 = £4.89. × 5 days = £24.46 a week. × 48 weeks = £1,174.26 a year, or £97.85 a month.
Assumptions and limits
- Fuel only: parking, wear and tear, insurance and tolls are not included.
- A year is 48 commuting weeks, allowing for holidays. There is no separate input for weeks.
- Days per week must be between 1 and 7.
- Fuel use is converted from miles per gallon using the UK (imperial) gallon of 4.54609 litres.
- You enter the fuel price; the calculator does not use a live or average price.
Key Takeaways
- A 15-mile commute each way, 5 days a week, at 40 mpg and 143.5p a litre costs about £1,174 a year in fuel over 48 weeks.
- Each commuting day you drop cuts the weekly fuel cost by one day's cost: for a five-day commute, one day at home saves a fifth.
- Fuel is only part of what commuting by car costs; parking, wear and tear and insurance come on top.
